Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of Cichorium intybus: a review

The plant Cichorium intybus L., also known as Chicory, is found in different parts of the world and has a rich phytochemical composition. Within its spectrum action, been studied about performance against pathogenic microorganisms biofilm. Therefore, objective present study to realize literature review on antimicrobial antibiofilm actions species intybus. For this, searches were carried out databases PubMed / MEDLINE, EMBASE, Gale - Academic OneFile Science Direct for articles published until August 2020, using MeSH descriptors “Anti-infective agents“, “Dentistry” “Periodontal disease” derivatives together with keyword “Cichorium intybus” variants. A total 998 results found. After critical reading titles abstracts, 18 selected preparation study. includes without time restriction that approach action. Case reports reviews excluded. Chicory variety chemical compounds ensure it wide range uses, presenting action bacteria, fungi viruses, especially Hepatitis B virus. Almeirão good vitro, however, more studies are needed standardize methodology, addition elucidating clinical practice plant.

Sesquiterpene lactones in a hairy root culture of Cichorium intybus.

A transformed root culture of Cichorium intybus L. (Asteraceae) was found to produce sesquiterpene lactones of guaiane and germacrane type. Lactucopicrin, 8-desoxylactucin and three sesquiterpene lactone glycosides: crepidiaside B, sonchuside A and ixerisoside D were isolated from the roots. The yield of 8-desoxylactucin reached 0.03 g l(-1) at the early stationary phase of the culture.
